Domestic violence is a problem for every city, every country, and every continent on earth. Calgary, the largest city in Alberta, Canada, is no exception. For years the city has tried to stamp out domestic violence by increasing law enforcement and educating the public on the issue. All attempts have failed to stifle this despicable crime. Yet individuals and organizations all over the city have not given up on the war against domestic violence. The Calgary Chief of Police, Rick Hanson, as well as countless agencies and volunteers do all they can to help the victims of abuse and prevent future occurrences.

One of the greatest advocates for domestic violence victims is The HomeFront Organization, whose goal is to work with the local government to reduce the incidences of abuse in the city. For years they have fought to give a voice to the men and women who have been hurt from this crime. Their positive effect on the city of Calgary can be clearly seen in the fact that the second-time offender rate has been nearly cut in half since the organization’s creation, decreasing from 22% to 12%.

On Saturday, June 18, they will host a charity benefit to spread awareness of the domestic violence that plagues the city. The event is called “Big Boys and Their Toys,” during which 20 luxury cars, including a Corvette worth upwards of $150,000, will be auctioned off so that they may continue their important work.

The creative minds behind this event are the husband and wife team of Tom and Debra Mauro. Tom, who is the founder of Albi Homes, was brainstorming ideas with Debra, a HomeFront board member, for ways he could turn his love for cars into a fundraising opportunity and in less than a year, they will about to organize this unique event. Tom was inspired to work on this with his wife because he sees HomeFront as the uniting force that allows the police, Crown prosecutor, and social agencies work together for the good of the city.

The benefit will be held at the AirSprint Private Hangar, which is located at 1910 McCall Landing N.E. Amidst the extravagant South Beach décor, guests will be able to enjoy the beauty of the finest automobiles and private aircraft manufactured today. Police Chief Hanson has been selected as the night’s honorary chairman. The emcee will be Darrel Janz, the CTV journalist with over three decades of broadcast experience, and the celebrity auctioneer will be former NHL player Theoren Fleury.
