In this article today I’d like to talk about several very simple tips, tricks, and tactics that just about everybody can use to lower the cost of their car insurance and get better insurance.

Everything is getting so darn expensive! The recession that began towards the end of 2008 and has continued on into 2010 is making it harder and harder for average people to make ends meet. It seems like the price of everything just keeps going up and that includes car insurance too. Today I’d like to give you several tips that you can use to help lower the cost of car insurance.

The first thing you need to do is determine whether or not you are overpaying for car insurance at the moment. There are many different ways you can do this and the Internet provides great tools for this exact thing. Apart from the Internet you can also use the old-fashioned way, the telephone. However you end up doing it, this is basically what you have to do… call around or search around on the Internet for a half a dozen to a dozen different insurance companies and call them up and ask them for a rate quote based on your current driving circumstances.

Once you get quotes from half a dozen to a dozen different insurance companies, simply compare them to your current insurance company premium. If the quotes you received online or from the telephone are cheaper than what you’re currently paying, you are obviously overpaying! Simply cancel your current policy and purchase one of the cheaper ones.

When it comes to insurance there are usually two different types. The first type are what is called direct policy writers and they sell directly to the public without agents. Think Geico here. The other type are bigger insurance companies that sell through insurance agents. It’s a good idea to get quotes from each of these two different types of insurance setups because they can often vary dramatically, plus it’s easy to play one off against another by asking them to meet or beat the others price.

Another tip for lowering car insurance is to take a policy with as high a deductible as you can afford. This means that you will have to pay more out of your pocket if you have an accident before the insurance policy will kick in. The flip side is that in the meantime you will pay dramatically lower premiums.

Finally the best way to lower the cost of your auto insurance dramatically is to remove collision coverage from your policy and only purchased liability insurance. This strategy will generally only work if you own your car out right, because the bank will usually require you to purchase full coverage if you are still paying on a car loan. This strategy will also only work if your car is older because it may not be worth replacing the collision coverage.

So there you have several tips and tricks that anybody can use to help lower the cost of your car insurance. Hopefully this recession will end soon but in the meantime, any little thing we can do to save money is helpful.
