How Long Will a DUI Affect Your Auto Insurance Rates in California?
In California, DUI’s used to stay on your driving record for 7 years but that was recently extended to 10 years. Although a DUI stays on your driving record for 10 years now, the length of time an auto insurance company will charge you for the violation varies from company to company. Most CA auto insurance companies will charge you for the DUI for a period of 3 or 5 years. If your insurance company charges for 3 years, then your rates will drop at the first renewal of your policy after the full 3 years of your DUI has passed. Some companies may choose to charge for a DUI for more than 5 years but that is uncommon.
The CA DMV also requires you to maintain liability insurance with an SR22 filing for a period of 3 years after receiving a DUI in order to have a CA drivers license. Your drivers license is immediately suspended after being convicted of a DUI and the state requires the completion of a DUI program and SR22 Auto Insurance prior to the reinstatement of your license. Once you’ve completed the DUI course and obtained SR22 Auto Insurance, you can take both to the DMV and have your driving privileges reinstated after paying a $55 reinstatement fee. Once you’ve done this, be careful not to allow your insurance to lapse (late payment) as your insurance company is required to file an SR26 with the DMV, letting them know your insurance in no longer active which will result in the suspension of your drivers license again.
If you need an SR22 but don’t own a vehicle, you will still need an SR22 to get your license back. You can purchase a Non-Owners policy with an SR22 filing. A non owners insurance policy in an auto insurance policy that will cover you while driving any vehicle as long as it’s not registered to you or anyone in your household.
